Vrindavan – a place where every street, every temple and every tree tells the story of Krishna Leela. This is the land where the glory of Radha-Krishna’s love has been resonating for ages. One of the many temples of Vrindavan that is deeply etched in the hearts of devotees is the temple of Shri Bankey Bihari Ji.

Who is Shri Banke Bihari Ji?

The word “Banke” means crooked, tribhanga posture and “Bihari” means one who roams in Vrindavan. This name itself symbolizes the form of Shri Krishna when he stands playing the flute, immersed in love, looking towards Radha Rani.

Bankey Bihari

Shri Banke Bihari Ji is actually the combined divine form of Radha and Krishna, seeing whom the devotee feels that love, sweetness and devotion have come together at one place.

History of Bankey Bihari ji temple:

The temple of Shri Banke Bihari Ji was established in the 16th century by Swami Haridas Ji. He himself was a great musician and a saint immersed in devotion. It is said that when he was singing Raga Malar in Nidhivan, Shri Radha-Krishna appeared in front of him in the form of a single idol.

On the request of the devotees, Swami Haridas Ji installed that idol in the temple and from there began the tradition of worship and service of Shri Banke Bihari Ji.

Unique tradition of darshan:

The method of darshan in the temple of Shri Bankey Bihari Ji is very special. Here the darshan of the Lord is done by removing and putting the curtain every few seconds. The belief behind this is that the image of Thakur Ji is so attractive that if the devotee continuously looks at him, he goes into samadhi or gets free from worldly attachment.

There is no Aarti in this temple generally. Mangal Aarti is performed only on special occasions. Worship of God is called Seva here, because it is not worship, but an expression of love.

Festivals and Celebrations:

Every festival is full of joy and devotion in Bankey Bihari Temple. Especially Holi, Jhoolan Utsav, Sharad Purnima, and Janmashtami are celebrated here in a very grand manner.

During Holi, God himself gets drenched in colors and performs leela with the devotees. Gulal flies, creates Raas, and every devotee is immersed in joy.

In Jhoolan Utsav, Thakur ji is seated in a swing of flowers and swung, and the name Hari resonates in the atmosphere.

Architecture and atmosphere of the temple:

The architecture of the temple reflects Rajasthani and Mughal influence. White stones and beautifully carved pillars give a special dignity to this place.

The temple premises are always crowded with devotees, yet the peace and loving energy of the place draws everyone. Other famous places like Nidhivan, Prem Mandir and Rangji Mandir are also located nearby.

A Devotee’s Experience:

Once you cross the threshold of the temple, it feels like the outside world has been left behind. Darshan of Thakurji creates a feeling in the heart that cannot be expressed in words. Many devotees say that Bankey Bihari Ji’s smile has such a charm that it touches the soul directly.
